Caleb Bradhan initially had marketed it as a digestive syrup, but it was only much later that the cola became a ‘cool ´ drink. In 1902, he launched the Pepsi-Cola Company in the back room of his pharmacy, and applied to the U.S. Patent Office for a trademark. At first, he mixed the syrup himself and sold it exclusively through soda fountains. But soon Caleb recognize d that a greater opportunity existed to bottle Pepsi so that people could drink it anywhere. Pepsi-Cola enjoyed 17 unbroken years of success. Caleb now promoted Pepsi sales with the slogan, Drink Pepsi-Cola. It will satisfy you. Then came World War I, and the cost of doing business increased drastically. Sugar prices see sawed between record highs and disastrous lows, and so did the price of producing Pepsi-Cola. Caleb was forced into a series of business gambles just to survive, until finally, after three exhausting years, his luck ran out and he was bankrupted. By 1921, only two plants remained open. It wasnt until a successful candy manufacturer, Charles G. Guth, appeared on the scene that the future of Pepsi-Cola was assured. Lord Of The Flies By William Golding And Mary Shelly

Irreversible actions that someone regrets can change a person for the worse in a split second. Evil is impacted by the society around it because it can influence people to act and think differently and it can cause people to get hurt. Societal Evil is present in the following books, Lord of the Flies by William Golding and Frankenstein by Mary Shelly. The societies in these books affected different characters for the worse. When society influences evil it is so powerful that it can impact a society to the point that people will follow the wrong leaders, hurt other people and falsely generalize others, these can be so damaging that the society can make false assumptions on the person and can make the society fall apart. Society can persuade people to change their own beliefs and follow the lead of a group that think and act completely different. In his article Gillett explored the ideas of how doctors decide to let people die even though they do not want to. G.R Gillett author of â€Å"Why Let People Die?† explains how doctors work as a whole to make decisions that are crucial to the health of a patient by stating: Given that in these matters the lay person and the doctor are in substantial agreement, much of what I consider to be the presuppositions of both may well be regarded as touristic but I hope they will serve to shed some light on important features of our ethical thinking in medicine. In particular I hope to provide reasons for the abandonment of active intervention,

Character Analysis Jim Casy Essay Example For Students

Character Analysis: Jim Casy Essay Bradford Wright 10/5/04Jim Casy is the most interesting character we have met so far. Theformer preacher has a colored past and he seems to be moving into acompletely different point in his life. Although he has given up the lifeof a preacher, Casy still has the instincts of a preacher to help those inneed. Jim Casy decidedly does not believe in the church anymore, but hedoes have very strong emotions and opinions about life and how it should belived. He tries to keep himself from preaching his opinions to others, buthe still has the need to speak his mind no matter how sheepishly. Jim Casy decides to go west with the Joad family to start off his newlife as a reformed preacher. Gonna lay in the grass open an honest withanyone thatll have me. Gonna cus an swear an hear the poetry of folkstalkin. All thats holy, all thats what I didn understan. All themthings is the good things. (pg.128) He wants to try and understand peopleand connect with them in a way that he could not as a holy man. Casybelieves that the real important things in life are not found in the bible, but rather in the everyday lives of people, especially the simple peopleliving regular lives. He feels he can learn more from just listening toTom and his family then he ever did studying the scriptures and solvingpeoples problems. Jim Casy is very reserved and quiet, unless prompted into a topic orconversation. Once he gets hold of an idea, though, he runs with it andtries to get across the way he looks at the world. Oh, Im a talker! saidCasy. No getting away from that. But I aint preachin. Preachin istellin folks stuff. Im askin em. That aint preachin, is it?(pg.128) Jim has a very deep and inquisitive mind. He spends a lot of hislife thinking. So when he becomes involved in a topic all the questionsand ideas he has going through his head start emptying out into a drawn outspeech. What comes out is not necessarily structured and may not evenmakes sense sometimes, but he makes you think. This is what makes Jim Casyso intriguing, when he says something you have to thoroughly examine whathe says in order to fully appreciate it. If you just read the words atface value then you lose much of the meaning. Any character that makes thereader think is always interesting and how he develops in his new lifestylewill be t he most interesting progression of all.

Mechanics of Writing Essay Example

Mechanics of Writing Paper What is mechanics in writing? The goal of the mechanics of writing is to make the writing precise and grammatically correct. It is directed to make the writing systematic and being concerned about how to be correct in spelling, punctuation, italics and so on. The mechanics of writing are the rules that must be followed while preparing research paper so that the research strategies and the format becomes systematic and consistent in all academic sectors. If one does not follow or if there are no such rules of writing then the writing would be certainly very difficult. Factors in mechanics of writing The important factors in mechanics of writing are: Spelling Punctuation Italics( underlying) Names of persons Titles of works in the research paper Quotations Capitalization and personal names Spelling Spelling in the research work should be consistent, clean and correct expert in quotations. The spelling in the quotation must be the original whether correct or incorrect. If we have to divide any words, we should not do so at the end of the line. If the word does not fit there, we should leave the space and bring the words in the next line. Punctuation The purpose of punctuation is to bring clarity in writing and to make it comprehensible. Punctuation clarifies sentence structure, separating some words and grouping others. It adds meaning to written words and guides for readers to understand as they move through sentences. Commas, full stops, semicolons, colons, dashes and parenthesis, hyphens, apostrophes, quotation marks and exclamation point all serve the function of punctuation and one should take account of all these marks while writing research works. In general, we should underline foreign words used in an English text. The name of the book in which a person is doing research is always italicized. Names of Persons Generally, a researcher should state a person’s name in a text of his or her research paper fully, accurately and exactly as it appears in the original source. For example, Martin Luther King, Jr. should be used as it is not as only Martin Luther. A researcher must not use formal titles in referring to men as women, living or dead, such as Prof. Devklota. Dr.Sangita. Instead of it, the researcher should only write Devkota, Sangita and so on. Titles of works in the Research Paper Title of the publication works in the research paper should be cited form the title page not form the cover page. For capitalizing titles, one should capitalize the first words, the last words, the words and the principal words, the last words and the principal words in both titles and sub-titles. Generally title of the works must be underlined or italicized. Title of the names of books, pamphlets, periodicals, films, radio and television programs etcetera should be underlined if hand written or italicized if printed in the research paper. Titles of the names of articles, essays, short stories, short poems, chapters of book and so on should be put with in quotation marks. The same is for the case of unpublished work, such as lectures and speeches. Quotations Only the most important words, phrases, lines and passages should be quoted in the research paper as briefly as possible. The researcher should put them with in quotation mark if they are three lines or less than three lines. If a quotation runs to make than four lines, it should be put under indent. Capitalization and personal names The chief reason to capitalize a word is that the word is proper, not because the word has greater status than other words. A proper noun identiï ¬ es a speciï ¬ c member of a class. A common noun, on the other hand, denotes either the whole class or any random member of the class. For example, King Henry VIII (a particular member of a class) was a king of England (the class itself). Answering the following question can help you determine whether a noun is proper. If the answer is yes, the noun is probably a common noun. Politics in education free essay sample

Politics in education is an issue that presently pervades educational system in the country. The government, specifically the legislators, is inept in formulating laws that can address the crisis in the educational system. A sad reality that is happening right now is the formulation of policies with the main purpose of making our educational system at par with those in other countries, but there are no concrete guidelines as to how these are to be implemented. Most educational experts are technocrats with no experience in the field. Yes, their programs are good, to say the least, but because f their lack of experience in actual classroom teaching, they fail to study the application of these programs. One specific example is the Bridge Program that was implemented a few years ago. This program assessed the competency of Grade Six pupils to be promoted to High School. There were grade six pupils who scored below the passing mark that were made to repeat grade six to bridge their admission to high school. We will write a custom essay sample on Politics in education or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Thus, this added another year of elementary schooling. However, after a year of its implementation, the program was stopped. Worst, teachers in the classrooms were not duly informed of the reasons for its non continuance. This is just one of the many educational programs implemented in the Philippine educational system that were not properly monitored and evaluated. This brings to a conclusion that Filipinos are only good planners but not good implementers and evaluators. As educators, what then can we do to transform the image that the educational system had propagated through the years? As an educator, I believe that total transformation must be implemented in the education sector of the country. When I say transformation of the education sector I refer to the total re orientation of the system which would start from policy transformation. Education policies and programs, including the curriculum must be carefully evaluated and studied whether they are attuned to the needs of the people and the country. Review of the provisions must be done in all levels and participation of the stakeholders must be solicited. Experts must be realistic in coming up with more attainable policies, that will address not only the educational problems but more so contribute to economic growth and development of the country. I also believe in the values reorientation of the Filipinos as a key to national development. The integration f values education in the curriculum, I believe is still not enough to address this need. Values become more permanent in the minds and hearts of the pupils and students when they are caught, modeled by their mentors, rather than being discussed as abstract concepts in the classrooms. Thus, there is an urgent call for teacher transformation, in terms of their values orientation. I believe that teachers cannot become effective models of good moral values unless they undergo some process of values transformation. It is always wise to say follow what I say and do, rather than follow what I say, do not follow what I do. It is only when pupils and students concretely observe their teachers consistently practice these good values that they will be able to replicate these in themselves. These, I believe is easier said than done. But unless we start doing it, we cannot claim tried. Lastly, I believe that teachers transformation must include their upgrading or updating tor protessional and personal development. Even it the salary of the ordinary public school teacher had been standardized to be competitive, with the increasing economic crisis, it will still be not enough to afford them attendance to seminars, trainings and enrollment in graduate education. Hence, government support and intervention, along this line is very much needed. Our teachers are professionals, and I believe their pre-service training had equipped them with the necessary skills to teach. Yet, with the advancement in science and technology, there is a great need for them to acquire competence in the use of these state of the art equipments to enhance their teaching skills. The government must invest on our teachers because it is through them that we train and develop the minds of our future leaders. As they say, show me your schools and I will tell you what society you will have.

New SAT Practice Tests 8 Tips for Finding and Using Them

New SAT Practice Tests 8 Tips for Finding and Using Them SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips The new SAT is officially here, which means that a lot of the old SAT practice material out there isn’t very helpful anymore. In order to study effectively, it’s important to use practice tests that test the same strategy and content as the SAT. With the recent SAToverhaul, this means turning to new practice material. Official College Board tests are the gold standard when it comes to test prep materials. Here, you’ll find free links to all the official New SAT practice tests, essays, answer keys, and scoring instructions, along with tips and strategies on how to use them. You might notice, however, that there’s a limit to how much free official prep is available. If you’re looking for more legitimate practice problems to work with, you’ll find helpful alternatives to the official practice tests towards the end. Free Official New SAT Practice Tests These following tests are the only free official practice tests for the redesigned SAT. If you need preparatory material, these practice tests are the best things you can use. In order to prepare effectively for the SAT, you want to use practice problems that test the same content, in the same ways, with the same timing restrictions as the actual test. If you use sub-par practice materials, you may be doing yourself more harm than good by preparing for things that won't actually help you on the SAT- this just wastes your time and leaves you underprepared, even if you study hard. Actual practice tests from the College Board meet all of the criteria I listed above because they're written by the makers of the SAT. Practice Test 1: Questions | Answers | Answer Explanations | Essay Practice Test 2: Questions | Answers | Answer Explanations | Essay Practice Test 3: Questions | Answers | Answer Explanations | Essay Practice Test 4: Questions | Answers | Answer Explanations | Essay Practice Test 5: Questions | Answers | Answer Explanations |Essay Practice Test 6: Questions | Answers | Answer Explanations |Essay Practice Test 7: Questions | Answers | Answer Explanations |Essay Practice Test 8: Questions | Answers | Answer Explanations | Essay Practice Test 9: Questions | Answers | Answer Explanations Practice Test 10: Questions | Answers | Answer Explanations How to Use Official New SAT Practice Tests Most Effectively With a limited number of officialSAT practice tests available, you'll want to make sure you use each and every practice problem as effectively and as efficiently as possible. Follow these steps to get the most out of the official tests: Mimic Official Testing Conditions You need to use official practice tests because they're as close to the real SAT as you can get. In order to get the most out of them, you should also recreate real SAT testing conditions as best you can. To do this, you should: Take each test straight through, in a single sitting if possible. The SAT requires an extended period of intense focus- the more you practice these marathon testing sessions, the better off you'll be on test day. Time each section carefully. Many students have issues with timing on the SAT- if you give yourself extra time (even a couple minutes) on a practice section, you might think you're performing better than you actually would on test day. Even if you can't take a whole test straight through, make sure you time each section appropriately Do a Post-Mortem After Every Test The whole point of investing time and energy in SAT practice is so that you can learn from your mistakes and improve your score. If you do a ton of practice but never figure out where you're messing up, you scores won't go up- it's as simple as that. If you want to know exactly how to analyze your practice materials, check out our guide on the best way to review your mistakes on the SAT. Don't Use Them All at Once With only 10 official practice tests, you're limited when it comes to optimal practice materials. As such, it's important to pace yourself and use the official tests wisely. This means only moving on to the next practice test after thoroughly reviewing your mistakes from the previous one. You may even want to re-do tough questions (after a waiting period) to see if you can figure them out after reviewing the material. What Are Your Other Options for SAT Practice Materials? Thesetests are a good place to start, but you could run out of practice material quickly if you have an intensive study plan. Here are some other things you can do to get your hands on quality study material: Use PSAT Practice Tests The PSAT is made by the College Board (the maker of the SAT) and closely resembles the new SAT. It's not a perfect match, but it will be very similar to what you see on the actual test. You can find a complete list in our guide to PSAT practice tests. Get an SAT Prep Book You should have the same concerns with SAT prep books that you do with free online prep materials: you want to make sure they’re as close to the real thing as possible so that you can study effectively. If you choose to get an SAT prep book, make sure you purchasea highly rated, legitimate resource. You can start by checking out our guide to the best SAT books- it's updated regularly so you know you're getting the most up-to-date recommendations. Use Other College Board Resources The College Board has other practice material available besides their complete, official practice tests. You can check out individual practice questions on their website for the math, reading, writing language, and essay sections- they're all official. You can also check out College Board-approved practice problems through Khan Academy. Although this is a great resource, keep in mind that there are problems with just relying on this service to prepare for the SAT. Use Unofficial Free Tests (With Caution) Unofficial free tests can be good resources for students who will be doing a lot of prep and require supplementary materials. There are afew things to be wary of when you look for unofficial tests: Free test prep materials, by virtue of being free, are often lower quality than paid prep materials They may not test the same content in the same way that you'll see on the real SAT These tests may be particularly helpful if you're already a high scorer and want to do a deep dive on what makes official materials different from non-official ones.Ultimately, unofficial tests are best for untimed content review- don't worry if you come across weird question types or content. You can start your search for unofficial tests with Ivy Global, MajorTests.com, Varsity Tutors, and Veritas Prep. Check out our massive guide to free prep material for more tips and tricks to using these unofficial tests. How to reform the United Nations security council Essay

How to reform the United Nations security council - Essay Example One may wonder how solutions to could solutions to peace be reformed? The â€Å"efforts† in the form of resolutions presented by the United Nations Security Council holds the terms of peace. The resolution system set in place in accordance to all parties present to reach peace is a good start. The follow up on the resolution is where reform could be used. A resolution that is not followed is only reacted to by another resolution. The reaction to such a resolution was formulated on March 27, 2011 (Resolution 1973) in regards to the Libyan Government’s failure to follow the original (Resolution 1970) formulated on February 26, 2011(Evans) The United Nations Security Council is known for peace not punishment and unfortunately rebel groups only respond to punishment. The resolutions should incorporate strict â€Å"if not followed consequences† to the parties involved. The healthy fear of the United Nations Security Council needs to be implemented, just as the healthy fear of a loving parent. A parent who corrects a child with no follow through with discipline the child will not only continue but have no regard for the parent. Works Cited Evans, Gareth. â€Å"The U.N.
